We are proud to welcome our new director in 2017 - Rhonda Spoelstra. Rhonda is a 14 year member of Sweet Adelines, a Certified SAI Director and baritone in SoundByte Quartet in Region 15. She has spent her lifetime making music, as a vocalist, guitarist and director of several and varied groups/bands of all ages. Her passion began as a child, singing acapella with her family. One of the musical highlights of her life has been recording two cd's and touring the country with the band she was part of in college. As an assistant director of Spirit of Syracuse, working with small groups and individuals was her specialty. She has an uncanny ability to empower singers to believe in themselves, improve their skills and perform better than ever. Her greatest joy is to see people's hearts and lives transformed through the magic of music. We look forward to many years of working with Rhonda.

Kathy Wakeman

Kathy Wakeman was our director from 2012-2016, and led us to Most Improved Chorus awards in 2013 and 2016. She came to us with a wealth of musical and technical knowledge, incredible enthusiasm and energy, and a significant experience background in Sweet Adelines and Barbershop Harmony.

Kathy was introduced to barbershop harmony while in high school, and at the age of 19, joined the internationally competitive Rochester Chorus of Sweet Adelines International with Maggie Swift at the helm. While with the chorus, she was lead section leader, served on the music/performance team and held several leadership positions.  Many of Kathy’s quartets were coached by Maggie, who shared her barbershop harmony knowledge and talents over many years in her kitchen.  Two of them – Touch of Class and Viva! earned the right to represent Region 16 at the international competitions in Miami and Portland, Oregon.  Kathy has also served at the regional level as Communications Technology Coordinator and in a musical resource capacity.

Kathy previously directed the Seneca Soundwaves Chorus of Sweet Adelines International for 14 years, and led them to two Most Improved Chorus Awards in 2000 and 2004, as well as a 3rd Place Small Chorus award in 2005.

Kathy is a gem with a brilliant sparkle. We wish her well in her new endeavors as Music Educator with the Gates-Chili School District.
